What connects the novels is their ruthless understanding of communities: neighbors watch, rationalize and protect themselves while disaster becomes normal. Published shortly before Samson’s early death, her only novel gradually became a cult classic because its plainspoken, pressure-cooker horror is almost unbearable. If The Amulet’s inventively staged deaths were part of the pleasure, The Nest is indispensable. Its threat is carnivorous cockroaches, but Douglas does much more than supply creature-feature mayhem: he builds an entire community, gives its residents grudges and vanities, then lets catastrophe tear through their assumptions about who deserves to survive.

The result is disgusting, funny and remorselessly fast—pulp horror performed with real narrative discipline. Long treasured by vintage-paperback devotees and later revived in the Paperbacks from Hell line, The Nest has precisely the disreputable energy that lesser horror novels imitate but rarely sustain.
